As a woman who grew up in the 1960s, I learned very little about my own female anatomy. Words like vagina and cervix were taboo and rarely muttered outside of the doctor's office. This meant that as an adult I had minimal knowledge about women's health. I didn't see this as a problem until a lump showed up on my breast when I turned 40. I had no idea I needed to complete regular breast exams. Lucky for me, the lump was found during a routine gynecological exam and a biopsy revealed that the lump was benign. After my cancer scare, I realized that if I had know more about my own body, I could have found the lump sooner.
