Summer is a great time to get together with friends and family, especially if you're busy with work or school for the rest of the year. If you're recovering from an addiction, it can also be a time when the temptation to relapse is elevated. Whether friends offer to take you out partying, or you see a bucket of alcoholic beverages on the beach, the temptations are all around you. That's why it's so important that you plan ahead. Creating a plan – and sticking to it – will allow you avoid those temptations that would derail your recovery. Here are four steps you can take to avoid relapse this summer.

Choose Your Company Wisely

When you're in a recovery program, the best way to protect yourself is to choose your company wisely. This is particularly important if you're going to be returning to the town where your problems began. Old buddies may want to gather to remember old times. To prevent relapse, you should avoid this type of situation. Instead, surround yourself with people who understand the struggles you're facing and want to help.

Bring a Sober Friend

If you're going to be attending parties where alcohol will be readily available, bring a non-drinking companion with you. Having a sober friend by your side will help you avoid temptations that might cross your path. When choosing a sober friend to accompany you, make sure that they're in a position to avoid temptation as well. For instance, if you'll be taking someone who's also in a recovery program, make sure they're far enough along in the recovery program to steer you away from temptation.

Attend Your Meetings

Summer is not the time to miss your weekly meetings. Whether you're leaving town on vacation, or friends are coming to see you, make sure you continue to attend your meetings. If you're leaving town, be sure to find the location of the nearest meeting as soon as you arrive.

Take Care of Yourself

It can be difficult to find time for yourself when you're busy entertaining friends and family. However, that's exactly what you have to do. Make time in your schedule to exercise, relax and eat right. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout the summer will help you overcome the temptations that are sure to come your way.
