Your ability to see well can decline with age. The good vision that you took for granted when you were younger can quickly diminish and become significantly weaker once you reach middle age. However, you can take steps to prevent many age-related vision challenges. These reasons may convince you to undergo regular eye exams as you age.

Detecting Macular Degeneration

One of the primary conditions that yearly medical eye exams can detect is macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the detachment of the retina on the back wall of the eye. It causes side effects like seeing black dots in the front line of your vision. It also weakens your central vision.

Macular degeneration is common with certain health conditions like Type II diabetes. If you are diabetic, your primary care physician may recommend that you undergo medical eye exams to determine if you have macular degeneration.

However, macular degeneration can also affect people without diabetes and cause them to lose their central vision. Treating this common, yet detrimental, eye condition requires you to undergo laser surgery. The surgery is designed to attach the retinas to the back of the eye wall and restore part or all of your former good vision.

Detecting Glaucoma and Cataracts

Another reason to undergo regular eye exams as you age involves determining whether or not you have glaucoma or cataracts. Both conditions are common in middle-aged and senior-citizen-aged people. The presence of these conditions can cause vision problems like cloudiness, loss of depth, and, in some cases, partial or total blindness.

If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, you may need to take prescribed medications to ease the discomfort of this condition. You also may need to undergo laser surgery to restore your vision.

Likewise, the removal of cataracts requires the use of laser surgery. This surgery can make it easier for you to see. You also can resume activities like driving safely and avoid the worry that you may have to give up your license because of your poor vision.

These are some reasons to undergo regular medical eye exams as you age. Age can bring on a host of vision conditions that can make it difficult for you to see well. Yearly eye exams can be particularly crucial if you are a Type II diabetic. You also need to undergo regular eye exams as you age to detect conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.
